There will be a NYC Hit and Run gathering on the evening of Saturday, July 22nd.

The gathering will be at 6pm at Revival Bar, located at 129 E. 15th Street, NYC. The bar website is http://www.revivalbar-nyc.com/.

Among many other refinements, Revival features an outdoor heated smoking garden patio!

All Hit and Run commenters, lurkers, and Reason staff are welcome to attend! We are hoping for a really big turnout and a really good time. Hope to see you there!

Barstow Freak- I've been dropping hints about a KC gathering for a while now. But there aren't that many H&R people in the area.

Regulated how? That's the question. What other place can you buy beer at 5am? In the south, you get a ticket for jay walking. I'll take a little business regulation over the freedom to live how I want to live every time.

Aw, man! I'm going to be upstate camping with my kids this weekend. Next time let's have the NYC get-together on a weeknight or after Labor Day. In the summer, no one is in the city on weekends but tourists.

You're probably right. I'm just too selfish. Dancing is stupid, don't have a car, hanker for a beer at 4am more than smoking on the dance floor, and I actually enjoy smoking out with the rebels outside. Still, show me a city with no parking restrictions, and I'll say that's not a city, that's a BS little pipsqueak town.

No, Smacky, but if a bar is going to allow people to dance (customers, I mean, not entertainers) they need a special "cabaret" license that's a pain in the butt to get.

I thought the dancing thing was repealed a few years ago.

smacky, they're referring to the cabaret law of 1926, which required an establishment to obtain a license from the city in order to have more than 3 people dancing on the premises. It was a not-so-veiled way to chase black clubs out of areas where they weren't wanted. The Giuliani admin used the same laws a few years back to close down clubs where they thought drug dealing was going on.

A quick google investigation seems to indicate that the cabaret license law was still in effect as of early 2005...strangely there's no article on wikipedia about the controversy.

re: Dancing Ban

Yes, it's still in effect, although people stopped complaining because some new scenes opened up to respond to the demand...(i.e. people come to brooklyn where no one gives a shit)....but I do miss the smaller east village bars that would have DJ's and ~10-20 people could boogie all night in very cozy setting.

The main driver of the ban in its recent (Giuliani) incarnation was to reduce noise in residential communities. Like the aforementioned east village.

re: 'CONTROVERSY' - It was a lot like the smoking ban, where people complained for the first 6 months, then shrugged and moved on. I think it prompted the emergence of a bunch of new, medium sized clubs to be honest. But I still think it's gay you can't even shimmy in smaller bars. Or do the monkey. Or the bird. Or watoosie. Or even the mashed potato. Really, none of the 1000 dances are permitted.

I still dont think of NYC as 'the most regulated city'... unless you consider the mafia regulators. Which in many ways they are.

I would actually endorse a revival of the 'no spitting fine' of the tuburcular era. @#*&$@ punk kids spit on everything.

follow up thought on the 'dancing ban'...

To be fair, I think there are MORE places to go dancing now as a consequence of the ban... just that your everyday Manhattan bar or retaurant where people get wasted until 4AM can't have so much as 'agressive head nodding' without risk of losing their liquor licence.

One place that are exempt from the ban are the ethnic 'social clubs'? There was a place downtown (canal & b'way) that was a ukranian social club that had the most slamming sat night dance party. You paid a $5 'membership fee'. You got a card, which was cool. Total madness, dancing to baltic techno, drinking those oversized 8% beers.

I should make a clarification on the directions to Revival, since it's difficult to see directions on the bar website.

There also appears to be Metro directions on the bar website. You just have to look really carefully because I think either their website wasn't properly put together or else the "directions" link doesn't show up well in some browsers. Here is the link again:
