This slow drawdown plan seems to be the worst of both worlds: there would still be a large, intrusing foreign military presence irritating ordinary Iraqis, inspiring insurgents, and serving as targets for attacks; but the capacity of that army to defeat the enemy in battle, or even provide security, would be reduced.

Being a little bit of an occupier is like being a little bit pregnant.

Does anyone else remember this golden oldie?

"Iraq is a educated, secular, middle class society. This means that Iraqis are unlikely to turn to Islamism once the Baathists are gone. This makes Iraq a particularly target for regime change."

I even remember war supporters bragging about how well "secular parties" did in the very first round of voting.

I think you need to change your bait, Joe.

Joe, I am quite certain that transforming Iraq from a hellhole with a secular government into a hellhole with an Islamic fundamentalist government and ties to Iran was Bush's plan all along. And I'm also sure it reduces the threat radical Islam poses to us.

Granted, I don't remember Bush actually ever saying so, but then again I was stoned throughout most of the run-up to the Iraq War.

So, what's wrong with splitting up Iraq into 3 countries? Right now, it may be one of the least bad options.

In the next election, Bush should make the announcement: "If the secular parties obtain a majority, we will set a timetable." Of course it might be too late now since as I understand it, the current legislature will be able to amend the constitution by majority vote and subsequent legislatures will face greater obstacles in doing so.

I have thought from the very beginning that of all the possible outcomes, this would probably be the best and most natural. Why we are fighting so hard against it is frustrating to me.
