In yesterday's LA Times, Reason's own Matt Welch throws a couple of beanballs squarely at the heads of "two loud-mouthed, value-subtracting columnists, [Bill] Plaschke and T.J. Simers." Bonus points to Welch, as both are columnists for the very paper in which his Bronx cheer appeared.

I like the cut of your jib, kid.
You got grit.
Spunk.
Moxie.
Picture me slapping a rolled up newspaper in my hand while I say
that. That's pretty much what I'm going for here.
Great big huge stones.
Quite the sportsfisking. As an A's fan who feels for DePo, I must say bravo, Matt.
My only criticism is that you didn't rip Simers enough. A few
jabs about the the glass house of someone who complains about the
"Grocery Store Bagger" in his sports columns resides in should not
be throwing stones.
Plaschke and Simers are awful
I would love to have read this piece had it not been for the lousy ass LA Times registration requirement. That said, whatever lousy thing you said about Plaschke couldn't have too harsh. Sports writers used to be urban and intelligent. People like Ring Lardner and Frank DeFord. Now they are just loud mouth jerks who write things that if they ever had the balls to say to someone's face would get them the ass kicking they so richly deserve. Palaschke and his ilk have helped make the sports page unreadable.
Gawd, I hate Simers. Where do I start? The snotty, patronizing
tone. The lack of insight. The inaccuracies. The negativity. He
doesn't get it that people don't want to read about *him*, they
want to read about sports. Any other LA paper is better than the
Times.
Thanks for the letter. It has to be said. Because, alas, my not
buying the Times doesn't seem to be causing Plaschke and Simers to
vanish in a puff of spite.
Man, that was just beautiful. Since you lambasted them in their
very own LATimes, can we look forward to a Plaschke rebuttal in
Reason?
