OK, ok, you're a poet...and we all know it.

To all those who long for multi-party, parliamentary-style republics, please watch Germany over the next few months and years as it self-destructs.

|10.11.05 @ 10:48AM|

JMoore-

You can have multi-party politics without the parliamentary aspect. One half of the legislature can be elected in some manner that allows competition by more than 2 parties, while the executive and the other half of the legislature are elected on a single-winner basis.

We can have more parties without turning into Germany, Israel, or Italy.

JMoore:

there have been grand coalitions in germany before (60s). that's a bit of premature schadenfreude. austria existed for many years under a grand coalition. and just because one party controls things, even parties from "its side" argue and there's constant negotiation. the conservative and "liberal" parties in denmark were constantly squabbling, too.

but it's kinda funny that you're taking the flipside of an op ed piece in "profil" magazine that basically said the same thing about the us!

their coverage about us, especially now, says the exact same thing.

it's collapse watch, on both sides :)

Bullying corrupt asshole cops beating the crap out of innocent non-cops for no reason whatsoever? Awwwww. I feel all warm and fuzzy knowing that New Orleans is getting back to normal.

thoreau

Yes, quite true.

the Grand Coalition in the BRD of the 60's is a perfect case in point: a total disaster.

drf|10.11.05 @ 11:23AM|

how was it a disaster?

|10.11.05 @ 11:53AM|

Jennifer - They were just blowing off some steam. You know how stressed out they are. After all, that is exactly how men behave.

Hmmm. I just read the above and even I am having trouble seeing the irony in that. Well, let's just say they had a cliche moment. Pigs.

Ya know, (following up on an earlier self-defense thread), if you were to see two "civilians" beating the crap out of somebody like these two cops were, you would be justified in most states in using lethal means to stop the assault.

And in Texas, at least, the laws are drafted in such a way that they specifically allow the use of lethal self-defense against cops.

Just sayin', is all.

Hey, who's the guy posting as R C Dean? That's not the real R C.

|10.11.05 @ 2:47PM|

JMoore-And the government collapsing and accomplishing nothing is a bad thing...why?

|10.11.05 @ 2:59PM|

My big favorite is watching the cops subdue a "subject" by kneeling on their back, then beat the shit out of them when they "resist".

Let's all try an experiment. Lie on your stomach. Have a 200+ pound assistant kneel on your back. See if you can hold your hands still long enough that he/she could put cuffs on.

drf|10.11.05 @ 3:19PM|

can we wear leather and call you mommy while you're running this test on us?

drf|10.11.05 @ 4:13PM|

or - worse yet - give us helmut kohl...

I'm not a great fan of any German government since the Hansa went away. So I guess I won't be too disappointed by the Merkel-Schroeder beast.

Ah, if only the Germans (and the rest of Europe, for that matter) would realise that their post-war successes came about not because of their governments, but in spite of them. Dream on....

|10.11.05 @ 5:38PM|

Nah, Schroeder won't be in it - it'll be Merkel acting as though she's chancellor with Muentefering whispering in her ear: "In yer dreams..."

This is one of the reasons that France was never able to decide what the hell it was really doing in Vietnam. WHich left the animals in charge of the farm out in the colony.

Okay, so we know why the French fucked up over there. What's our excuse?

Okay, so we know why the French fucked up over there. What's our excuse?

Well, if you insist on asking that question, it's because we aren't any smarter.
