Information Wants to Be Published

I'm pleased as ponchado to pass along news that the greatest living Cuban baseball historian, octogenarian Severo Nieto, whose 50-year publishing blackout (due to Castro and exacerbated by the American embargo) I wrote about in the June 2002 issue, is finally having his first book printed in the United States: Early U.S. Blackball Teams in Cuba.

Nieto is one of this year's nominees to the "Shrine of Eternals," a sort of Hall of Fame alternative maintained by the laudable eccentrics at the Pasadena-based Baseball Reliquary, an organization that groks the truth that Jim Bouton will always be more Eternal than Jim Bunning. Today's L.A. Times has a nice little write-up on the Reliquary.

Havana would have been an infinitely better new home for the old Expos.
