Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown has started a weblog, which is new enough to still contain comments. Among the first entries is a Hunter Thompson obit ("His screeds against the sitting president were overwrought and tinged with paranoia, but Nixon's resignation would vindicate his torrid animadversions"). For a chuckle at my expense, read how Brown grilled me at last summer's Democratic Convention here. (Link via The Corner.)

Boy, he has his share of fans. Here's one of the comments from his first(?) post:

"Hey, I've got a better idea.

Since most crimes are comitted outside of a person's home, why not lock everyone in their houses and only let them out if they have a hall pass. You can take a bite out of crime that way. How's that for a 'nexus'. Boy, you guys sure know how to think 'em up.
Granted, it won't solve the family type offenses, but you don't seem to be talking about those either.

Let's not forget that convicted felons arent' the only ones that commit crimes, they're just the ones that got caught. Call up your local police department to find the ratio of caught to not-caught criminals.

Lets face it, Oakland has troubles. And noone envies your position as the person expected to fix it. But when your own district attorney has to soul search to find a wishy-washy way to argue that a plan is constitutional, you should know you're at least on the outer margins. It doesnt sound to me like you are on the high ground here.

The mere definition of 'nexus' should give you the clue. That is something to strive for in court, not a clear-cut exhoneration of a self-admitted marginal restriction on a person's right to go to church after 10pm on a Sunday night. :)

But then. lets not get testy and say that you aren't trying to do good for your city.

You live in the U.S.A, and there are limitations on government here, regardless of the potential effectiveness. It has to smell o.k from more than just 2 feet away, and from noses that aren't burried in it.

This has a bad smell to it from here."

Dude. Here's another one.

"This curfew scheme is yet another do-nothing idea from a do-nothing mayor who thinks he can take credit for a decades long overall downturn in the amount of the crime in Oakland by creating a program that confines people already sentenced by judges to additional sentencing without benefit of any appeal or hearing. It is a poor mayor indeed that proposes ideas that strip rights away from citizens. Imagine what he'll propose if he gains the vast powers of the California State Attorney General. Shame on you, Jerry Brown."
