...and the world we have to live in is controlled by a stupid thug from Texas.
Wow, history repeats, huh?

Goddamn what a bummer...
I loved Fear and Loathing in LV, both book and movie. I have fond memories of doing a lot of drugs with friends while watching that movie on dvd. We had a hard time not doing drugs when that movie started playing! :)

Excellent obit, Matt.
Not that I'm in any position to bring the hammer down on your friend Thor, but what's with the flagrant capitalization and Paris Hilton mosaic?

Matt,
So why are you sitting behind your computer typing up stories that will quickly long be forgotten from LA, NYC or Paris and out living the hard core journalist life when HST is your hero. Soon forgotten half-witted bloggers like you are so bloody boring compared to HST -- why not kill yourself now and save us the trouble.
yeah, the same can be said for me I guess, but I don't hold the dear fellow in such awe, though some of his pieces are quite excellent.
Cheers and Happy Days

spur,
To hold someone in awe is not to imply that the only worthwhile way to be is to be like him. In fact, it could easily be just the opposite. That is, you might hold someone in awe becaue he is unique and not easily emulated.
Would I be a hypocrite if I admired Spiderman yet didn't spin webs? Well, that's a little different....

Thompson's death was an ill-deserved victory for the greedheads and pigfuckers of this world.
Thompson may very well have viewed his suicide as a defiant victory.
