I became a Libertarian as a reaction against the New Deal sensibilities of Robert Heilbroner and J. K. Galbreath as much as a response to the writings of Ayn Rand, Nathaniel Branden, and Milton Friedman. It has been 34 years, but remembering being forced to read The Worldly Philosophers, still leaves a taste of bile in my mouth.

In all the attention given to Heilbroner's other books, his "The Essential Adam Smith" shouldn't be overlooked. It's an excellent introduction to Smith's writings, and to my mind earns Heilbroner forgiveness for all of his other writings.
