I'm sure the constitution requires it somewhere, but do we really need to inaugurate a president for his second term? It's not like he's going to suddenly start 'preserving, protecting, and defending' the constitution once he's taken the oath of office again.

Do you suppose that if you were to leave your baby stroller unattended the Secret Service would blow it up as a precautionary measure?

In 50 years when the world is one giant spent matchhead, and among the few survivors are the Reason editorial staff-- living in an underground privately funded bunker--the most overheard line will be:

"Well, John Kerry would have been just as bad."

I'm saying it cause I love you guys. Drop it already.

1.20.05 @ 9:02AM

Well said, Pavel.

The persistent notion that Kerry would "be just as bad" is mere sophistry at this point, and becomes more so with each passing day.

All alleged crassness of spending a cool $40 large aside, the biggest problem for some is the sticking of D.C. proper with the $12 million security bill (That'll teach 'em to vote 9 to 1 against).

The Daily Show's "man-on-the-street" interviews with D.C. residents feelings on getting stuck with the check were priceless.

Well that only seems fair to me, since the rest of us taxpayers around the country have been "stuck with the bill" for the salaries of all those DC beaurcratic pencil pushers in all those useless alphabet government agencies without whom DC would dry up and blow away.

get over your whining about the $40 million already. geez, clinton's first inaugural cost $33 million, which adjusted for inflation is considerably more than this one (yeah, i guess it cost a lot to fly in maya angelou and her enormous ego).

i HATE it when i'm forced to sound like i'm defending GWB! but face it, the dems' petulant refusal to timely concede in the last two presidential elections cost the republicans the chance to party on election night. so let 'em have their stupid party now. swallow your bitterness for just a little while.

You mean the ones who live in Virginia and Maryland?

1.20.05 @ 12:17PM

jimmy, Kerry conceded the next morning, as soon as the election could actually be called.

I thought Clinton's inaugural blowout (the one that clipped in stock footage of the Lincoln Memorial into the teevee coverage and passed it off as a live shot) was too lavish as well. Americans used to deride that sort of thing as "royalist" - whatever happened to that?

If Bush has spent a mere $10 million on his party and given the rest to tsunami relief, that would have been pure PR genius. It's funny how his political advisors, so smart about so many things, have such a blind spot when int comes to these types of gestures - remember the "Look, I'm touching black people" page on his website, under the heading "Compassion?" Or waiting three days to make a public statement of regret when the tsunami broke?

"You mean the ones who live in Virginia and Maryland?"

Yeah some of them live there too. But's there's plenty of civil servants and fed govt employees living in DC

It's funny how all the leftist talking heads on TV and in print who've been suggesting the Republicans cancel the inaquration and send the money for tsunami relief don't apply that same logic to all sorts of other events that cost tons of money - like the Academy Awards for example - nah that would put their Hollywood leftists pals on the spot.

1.20.05 @ 12:52PM

PERFECT comparison, Gil - the Oscars that immediately followed 9/11 were "toned down," didn't feature the red carpet march and million dollar dresses, etc.

You DON'T think having "only" three balls, instead of nine, and sending a big chunk of change to tsunami relief would have been a smart political move?

"PERFECT comparison, Gil - the Oscars that immediately followed 9/11 were "toned down," didn't feature the red carpet march and million dollar dresses, etc."

I don't see any plans for the Ocars to be toned down with the bulk of the money going to tsunami relief - or the Grammy's or any of those other celebrity self-contratulation fests.

Good points all and reason enough for my labeling the "crassness" as "alleged".

I stand by my thoughts that it's pretty chintzy to stick DC for the security bill considering the largess available.

But as for the OTHER 27 Mil? I say, They won...let 'em party. Tsunami victims aren't hurting any more or less for the expense and for the most part it's not coming out of my pocket by way of higher taxes.

I'm not defending Team W, so much as refusing to split hairs over silliness both/all parties are guilty of.

"remember the "Look, I'm touching black people" page on his website.." - Joe

Ha, ha! It's funny cause it's true...
