I disagree. I think the incidents cited are perfect examples of the importance of free speech. If the student reporters are not outraged at their treatment by the administration, then they shouldn't be in journalism. This will sound trite, I suppose, but: bad examples are the best examples for learning.
As I recall, back in the late 60s or early 70s the students at the Univ. of Florida ran into the same problem with the administration. The result was that the student newspaper became independent from the university. Not entirely, at first, but eventually it became "The Independent Florida Alligator" which, I think, is now entirely self-supporting.

The Alligator is completely independent and self-supporting, and has been for at least 20 years. You could probably get additional details from Brian Doherty, who used to work for the Alligator, or at least contribute articles, if I remember correctly from my grad school days at UF in the mid and late '80s..

This is one reason why institutional control, or lack/denial thereof, is such an important issue for student newspapers. If you accept university funding or facilities, then you have to put up with endless editorial meddling, if not outright attempts at censorship.

As for the LIU incident: If a university reveals private information about a student without his permission it violates the Buckley Act. If a school-owned paper printed a story about a student withdrawing due to poor grades, the subject of the article could turn around and sue the U for violating his privacy.

An independent paper would be in the clear, in my lay opinion, though it would have to take normal precautions against libel.

Mr. Wallis puts aside the important qualification that the First Amendment also includes religious freedom, which Baylor and other religious schools ought to be able to exercise.

The Buckley Amendment (also known as FERPA) does not protect GPAs, only grades in individual assignments or courses. A student's GPA is only confidential if the student chooses to make it so by requesting it in writing--even then there are exceptions for financial aid reporting and the like. If the newspaper published the person's overall GPA, then they are not in violation. If they had published the person's grades course by course, then that is a huge problem. And in that case we would probably be hearing more about it, because there would undoubtedly be a major investigation to find out *who* gave that information to the newspaper. I know our administration would be conducting a scorched-office search to find the source of the leak....

I received my journalism degree from Cal State Los Angeles---a sort of kurdish tent village for various neo-Maoist identity groups and other assorted weirdos.

Although we were frequently chastised by the Dean of Students for printing truthful (but unflattering) stories about the administration, our biggest obstacle was the students themselves.

Part of our budget was controlled by the chuckleheads in campus government who were notorious for slashing our budget because of "inaccuracies"---which is Marxoid shorthand for showing the temerity to quote some of the more outrageous statements made by our student body president and his cronies.

Fortunately, we had a strong-willed faculty advisor who stood up to the mob-like tactics we encountered.

Nevertheless, I certainly didn't walk away feeling like my fellow students were all that interested in the freedom of the press---(people were always demanding that we be "shut down")...

Interestingly enough, the print journalism department was discontinued shortly after I graduated with little protest by either faculty or students.
