(The "no-dancing" law covering most NYC bars goes a whole lot farther back than Bloomberg. 1926, in fact. And the sainted Mayor Guiliani, Hallowed be His name, enforced it plenty during his tenure. In the 1970s and 1980s it didn't figure too heavily in NYC nightlife because (1) dancing people danced at big discotecques and (2) the rock, folk, jazz and dive-bar jukebox contingents cultivated a rep for standing around with their arms crossed.)
