Ahhh yes, the evil soul-sucking E.U. The article was so hyperbolic nature I couldn't help but laugh.

AMB|6.24.04 @ 4:38AM|

I hate soccer. But I hate the E.U. more.

6.24.04 @ 5:06AM

Great example, soccer: nothing like a little friendly trampling and marauding to make sure we don't forget those quaint "idiosynchrasies" that the EU wants to pretend it can do away with.

Hey, I like regional idiosynchrasies as much as the next guy, but when centuries-old grievances lead to *deaths* at utterly inconsequential *sporting* events, you've got a problem. Maybe Mr. Young was merely pointing out the futility of the EU trying to pretend there are no differences? Surely he can't be defending such asinity.

6.24.04 @ 5:10AM

Heh, make that "asininity".

6.24.04 @ 5:20AM

Patrick,

Well let's also not pretend that similar hooliganism happens in American sports as well.

6.24.04 @ 10:37AM

So when I yell "Yankees Suck" at Fenway, it's actually a statement about the inherent hopelessness of uniting the various states?

Mr. Young, grow the fuck up.

6.24.04 @ 11:07AM

"So when I yell "Yankees Suck" at Fenway, it's actually a statement about the inherent hopelessness of uniting the various states?"

No, but the fact that the history of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry in many ways symbolizes the history of the relationship between Boston and New York since this country's founding might add fuel to the animosity.

How does that newspaper joke go? The Wall Street Journal is read by the people who run the country. The Boston Globe is read by the people whose parents used to run the country and did a far better job of it, thank you very much.

6.24.04 @ 11:13AM

Actually, it's all about free agency.

6.24.04 @ 11:59AM

It is at the local and regional levels that soccer best hurls sharpened coins at the European project.

So it turn out that soccer might be good for something after all!

6.25.04 @ 4:11AM

Read it chef? Do you have a point? (Other than on your pounds sterling?)

"Patrick,

actually, i would say that some roughness between fans is more common, and different, in europe. the FC Copenhagen/ Broendby match had riots twice a year. Rapid vs. the Violetten has the same. Feynoord vs. Ajax. also. maybe there's that kinda stuff in big ten (OSU=Michigan), but i would say that the euros tied up in nationalism/sports does trump how we play sports here.

after all, we're not refighting wars when our teams play... :)

last time i was at the crosstown, admittedly a few years ago, i wasn't frisked. nor was i frisked going to wrigley or comiskey. i sure have been frisked going into Parken or Prater stadiums. and i've seen more violence there than in the dowgpound at old cleveland municipal stadium back in the day (against pittsburgh, too!). and how the fans get separated in eurotarded land? i was in the Fire fan club and we partied with the other team's fan clubs... i can't see that with Bayern and Dortmund (or whoever)...

Jesus, you guys are fucking predictable. At least find criticisms of the game that are:

1. True.
2. Not 20 or so years old or more.

Mets 9, Evil 3!

I don't think anyone was killed at the Evil Stadium today, either, unless there was some normal Bronx street crime.

When accompanied by voters electing anti-US parties to Congress, it might.

And don't forget the Cubs-Cards rivalry, the greatest in baseball imho. There's still a lot of resentment in St Louis about Chicago beating them out to become the transportation center of the nation back in the 1870s.
