The eight finalists for memorials at the World Trade Center site are online here.

Designing a fitting memorial is no easy task but, FWIW, none of these is particularly striking or fitting in my opinion. They remind me just how stunning (and controversial) the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in DC was when it was unveiled. That may well have been the last memorial that actually packed a wallop and I suppose these things are always far more likely to disappoint than not.

I don't agree with Nick, I think they are all impressive.

The key point to my mind is acreage. This thing is going to be placed on some of the most expensive real estate there is. I don't dispute that the project will enhance the value of the property, only that some of the schemes seem to take up an inordinate (intentionally vague adjective) amount of space that might otherwise be employed to more wealth generating purposes.

The Wall is so powerful in part because of its simplicity. In a sense, you have to pay attention to the names themselves because there is nothing there to distract you visually...just a black wall.

On the other hand, the submissions for the WTC memorial, from what I can get from the limited information on the site, appear to be complex and involved "artistic pieces." In most of the cases (I also sort-of liked the "garden of light") there was no discernable connection between the physical structure and the event or the victims themselves. Its as if the artists involved thought long and hard about their own reputation but not about Sept. 11.

I also agree with the last post - any of these monuments would make a totally kick ass food court at the local mall. They could also easily be mistaken for a drug-fueled architect's designs for a re-model of O'Hare Airport.

"Lower Waters" looks pretty good to me, but count me underwhelmed by the rest (either as public works of art or as memorials).

If I had to vote, I'd pick #1.

But they all make the mistake of keeping the space together in the inhuman superblock created during the original project. I guess it's not the memorial designers' fault.

Actually, I thought a few of them were very good, though it's hard to get the whole picture from the brief information given. My favorite from what I've seen is the "Garden of Light" one, though I'm unclear about many of the details.

Passages of light looks interesting and Reflecting Absence might be if you could see more detail. Personally, I thing the whole site should be made into a park or something, but I'm sure that there would be too many people whining about how much money they'd loose. As if money was more important than the memory of those lost.

Glyph's link provided some more detailed explanations. I haven't read them all yet, but I don't like "Garden of Light" anymore... some hippie nut-job wrote the description which means that some hippie nut-job designed the thing. And I don't much trust hippie nut-jobs.
