Abusing History

What does National Review's Victor Davis Hanson have in common with Michael Bellesiles, the disgraced author of Arming America? According to Gene Callahan, they both alter the historical evidence to fit their preconceived political conclusions. In Hanson's case, "a little study of the original text reveals that on a number of occasions Hanson has excerpted from speeches that Thucydides is quoting, but treated them as if they were the wisdom of Thucydides himself."
