Move Over Todd Akin! 3 Other Monstrously Dumb Comments About Rape

Featuring Whoopi Goldberg, Bernard Shaw, and Clayton Williams.

(Page 4 of 4)

1. Clayton Williams makes "rape is like the weather" joke in 1990 Texas gubernatorial race.

In 1990, Republican Texas millionaire Clayton Williams looked like he was coasting to an easy win over Democratic candidate Ann Richards. Before a "working cow camp" event chock full of reporters, Williams compared the day's soggy weather to rape: ''If it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.'' Williams half-apologized for the comment, explaining to the press, "That's not a Republican women's club that we were having this morning...It's a working cow camp, a tough world where you can get kicked in the testicles if you're not careful.''

It turned out Williams did indeed end up getting kicked in the testicles - he lost a close race to Richards. At least his wife, improbably named Modesta, was there to nurse his wounds: ''If the word rape was in a joke, if sex was in a joke, it was just a joke,'' she told The New York Times. ''He's about as much of a gentleman, a caring person, as there is.''

    Akin's my Congressman. He's not bad, a bit too SoCon-ish, but good on other issues. That said, his comments to Charles Jaco, are just mind-numbingly stupid. Jaco is the essence of sniffy, effete liberal media here in STL, and Akin should have done a multi-point calibration of every single syllable he said. Instead, he stampedes ahead with this shit.

    I just got an email that says he's staying in. I responded that he should drop, and drop now.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    Akin is a staunch advocate of a federal prohibition of online poker. In 2006, he co-sponsored H.R. 4411, the Goodlatte-Leach Internet Gambling Prohibition Act,[18] and H.R. 4777, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act. (Wiki)

    He has been in the House since 2001 and without looking I bet he Voted for all the Bushpig Big Gov policies.

    He is a fucking disgrace.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    Here is the roll call:

    http://votesmart.org/bill/votes/11944

    He is gone anyway. He and Paul Ryan were tied at the hip and the GOP will smother him alive if they need to.

  • juris imprudent||

    Hahahaha - the roll call? Congress-critters get to go back and change their votes as long as it doesn't change the outcome. It is the perfect yes-I-did, no-I-didn't system.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    The final vote was 216-215 at 3am for the Bushpigs.

    His vote was vital. Not only did it create Part D but also subsidies for Part C (Advantage).

  • Brutus||

    Kinda reminds me of McCaskill's Obamacare vote, no? Each and every Senator that voted for cloture has his/her name on the law as the deciding vote.

    But that's good statism, right?

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    Obamacare is not as bad as Part D. The latter was completely unfunded.

    Yeah, I know, the mandate sucks but it can be avoided completely. Obamacare is a private insurance pathway with subsidies. Part D is too but was unpaid for.

    What an idiot.

  • Brutus||

    Obamacare is orders of magnitude worse. It puts insurers on the path to insolvency, leaving the Central State as the insurer of last resort. It's marxism by the drink.

    And McCaskill cast the deciding vote, along with votes spending trillions on stimulus and constituency-larding shit.

    I don't know about you, but I'd trade that for a little ol' gambling bill.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    Talk is cheap. His voting record is dismal. And he voted for the Iraq War and the surge and all funding bills. And the Patriot Act and DHS.

    I remember seeing that when it came out and all I could think is how much more the rapist will be pissed off after encountering that thing, increasing the woman's chance of being further injured. Unless it will cause debilitating pain to the rapist, she's better off without that.

    Shooting them will also help identify them for the police.

    Especially true if they don't move much afterwards. Saves a chase.

  • Christina||

    I thought the same thing too, but then I remembered what they said in self-defense class, "hurt him bad enough to run away." It's not a fair fight, so sticking around does the girl no favors.

    Plus, I'm pretty sure that something with teeth that can only be removed by a doctor causes pretty debilitating pain. Enough doubling over so the girl can scram before he even thinks to respond with violence.

  • amelia||

    Problem is, it really seems like a measure of last resort because the rape has to be in progress before the defense mechanism is relevant. Like with stun guns, which require close proximity. Guns are still best for nipping it in the bud...but for women who want one, a vagina dentata should be an option.

  • ant1sthenes||

    I never got how vagina dentata is supposed to be a scary thing. It's not like guys won't willingly put their dick into an orifice filled with teeth.

  • JoshSN||

    Weak!

    There is forcible rape and statutory rape, and clearly Whoopi's comment was talking about that. Remember, if no force or fraud was involved, a good number of libertarians would have save Polanski committed no crime.

    And Shaw's question didn't display any stunning ignorant of rape, or biology, but only of tact and fair play.

    And did you hear Akin's apology? He says he sympathizes with the "thousands" of women who are raped and abused. But close to 200,000 women are raped each year, and many, many more are abused.

    What someone should be asking is "What was the effed up source you got that crazy idea from, Rep. Akin, and can I get a look at it to find out what sort of other nonsense fills your head?"

  • ||

    Remember, if no force or fraud was involved, a good number of libertarians would have (said??) Polanski committed no crime.

    The girl he didn't rape-rape was 13 and under the influence. He was 43. There are not many libertarians who would defend his behavior but stay classy.

  • jacob the barbarian||

  • Marshall Gill||

    Who said anything about the government being involved? The Rep made a comment, he didn't author legislation.

  • Marshall Gill||

    Stress actually decreases a woman's chances of becoming pregnant, so Akin sort of has a point.

    Not just sort of. There is scientific evidence that arousal increases the chances for conception. The "study" that claimed that there were more conceptions from rape than consensual sex were not scientifically valid. Like much of today's politicized "science" they were looking to effect public opinion rather than attempting to find the truth. So they compared all consensual sex with all rape, as if the number of times contraception was used was the same.

    There are a number of reasons, stress included, that rape is less likely to cause conception.

  • Ron||

    I am so tired of politicians with this caliber of stupidity that it overflows onto everyone else and unfortunately telling him to resign is of little help because the lying left just says they all think that way and their only telling him to resign to hide their own beliefs.

  • SteveBrooklineMA||

    Nick is slinging bullshit about Whoopi. She did not "put forth a definition of sexual assault." She was pointing out that the specific crime to which Polanski plead guilty was not "rape" (i.e. not California Penal Code Section 261) but "unlawful sexual intercourse"(i.e. California Penal Code Section 261.5). Notice that Nick himself does not state that Polanski plead guilty to rape. Is he also putting forth a puzzling definition of sexual assault?

  • Sevo||

    Or simply a Hollywood suck-up willing to lie as required.

  • SteveBrooklineMA||

    "Nothing in there about drugging children..." Indeed, that is the point. Whoopi was not describing what Polanski did to the victim, she was trying to be specific about the charge to which he plead guilty in court. Are you capable of understanding the difference? It is possible for a person to commit a horrible crime, yet plead guilty to a lesser charge.

    Personally, I think it was a terrible miscarriage of justice. But the fact is that Whoopi is right: Polanski did not plead guilty to rape. He plead guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse.
