We Don't Need Another Hero

Former Bush speechwriter Michael J. Gerson's new book unintentionally reveals why Dubya is in the dog house with voters.

Over at the New York Post, reason Editor-in-Chief Nick Gillespie questions whether Bush insider Michael J. Gerson's Heroic Conservatism: Why Republicans Need to Embrace America's Ideals (and Why They Deserve to Fail If They Don't) really needed such a long subtitle.

"When a 15-year-old girl in the inner city lives in an atmosphere of squalor and daily abuse . . . when a Down syndrome fetus is casually killed as a life not worthy to be lived . . . when an infant in Africa grows burning hot, then cold with death from the lack of malaria pills that cost a few dollars."

Wow, "heroic conservative" is a much nicer way to say liberal.

I need to amend my favorite saying:

"It's very easy to be [heroic] with other people's money."

"...a conservatism of restless reform..."

I know! Those damn liberals have been sitting on their hands resistant to change for too long.

Michael Gerson needs a shorter title and subtitle? How about:

Michael Gerson: I Blow Goats

So, per Gerson, my choice is between left-wing progressive statist-socialism, or right-wing activist statist-socialism.

Talk about Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum! Just shoot me now.

"...as a group, seniors are fabulously wealthy and the vast majority are more than able to afford their own drugs."
Uh, have you actually met any old people lately, who didn't go to the country club every day? This comment is so strident - and incorrect - it actually makes Gerson look like less of an ass.

Gerson, a pious graduate of the Christian Wheaton College ("no drinking or dancing, neither much of a sacrifice in my case")

...shudder...

I have this extremely disturbing mental image of Gerson, swooning at the feet of GWB like the cover illustration on a "bodice-ripper" and gazing upward with languorous longing at his Presidential idol.

Libertarianism is "the elevation of personal and economic freedom over other values like compassion and community"?

Maybe book burning shouldn't just be a hobby for fascists anymore. Not a surprise to hear a conservative go against personal liberty, but isn't economic freedom pretty much the only reason that rational people voted Republican for so many years?
