Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI does not plan to attend the installation of his successor, the Vatican announced on Wednesday morning. The announcement came before the afternoon news that a new Pope had been elected.

Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, revealed on March 13 that Benedict XVI was following reports of the papal conclave with great interest from the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.
