Jail Guard Gets 30 Months For Smuggling Contraband

Federal prosecutors say a former corrections officer who helped smuggle contraband to a prisoner at the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility is now behind bars himself.

Jermel Brown of Camden was recently sentenced to a 30-month prison term. And once he’s freed, he will have to serve three years of supervised release and perform 500 hours of community service.

Prosecutors say the 35-year-old Brown used his position as a senior officer to smuggle in two mobile phones and two music players to a prisoner, who was cooperating with authorities. In return, Brown got $12,000 from another person outside the prison who was also cooperating with authorities.
