President Obama said Wednesday that last week’s school shooting in Connecticut should push House Republicans to step back from a partisan battle, relent and pass his budget deal, which he said was a “balanced” approach.

In an impromptu press conference at the White House, Mr. Obama said he’s “gone at least halfway in meeting” some of the Republicans’ demands on the budget, and said it’s time House Speaker John A. Boehner take the deal that the White House has put on the table.

“Take the deal. They will be able to claim that they have worked with me over the last two years to reduce the deficit more than any other deficit-reduction package,” Mr. Obama said.
